MENSTRUATION
A Curse for Men And Women Both

Chapter 2 - Prevalent beliefs related to menstruation

It is true that women are forbidden to worship at the time of menstrual cycle. She is stopped from joining any religious rituals, (even prohibition of touching Prasad is not allowed). It is already mentioned earlier in this article that the writings of 'Manusamriti' were believed to be behind this practice (malpractice in precise), while there has always been differences among the various intellectuals regarding the rights of 'Manusamriti'. Many scholars believe that many parts of 'Manusamriti' have been distorted since long. Even though it is true that women were deliberately made prohibited from worship during the period of ‘Rajaswala'. Otherwise, why would woman prevent herself from worshiping God in any circumstance and why would she agree to be tortured.

Some other beliefs are also observed which are helpful in providing with understanding that why this so-called hypocritical malpractice is in practice.

Remarks: - Although I have spent a long time researching and studying this subject, even though there is no such original source found which can authenticate the religiously correctness of the behaviour of the society during the period of women's menstruation. Most of the examples mentioned in this article are based on personal experiences and informal talks, which are discussed during interaction with various personalities living in different communities and races.

On this topic, generally two types of controversial explanations or say opinions are received which are in more prevalence today. You may believe in your opinion or not.

Prior to mentioning the opinions, I would like to write a short note to make you aware of the few Universal Laws, which in my view is very important to understand.

In order to give continuity to life, Mother-Nature in tune with the Divine had appointed Panch-Praanas, five vitalities in our physical body.

These vitalities have been appointed to keep our body alive and keep it running smoothly. The vitalities are basically biographic actions that work automatically, it means, these are the automatic actions. And because the vitalities are divinise, so no inauspicious action can be manifested by any of their method. 'Panch-Praana' are also called as Life Force Energy.

In the context of discussions about the subject of menstruation, we understand the 'Panch Praana' as 'energies' that flow in our body. And because they flow, they are windy by nature. And in Sanskrit language, wind is translated as Vaayu.

Following are the vital energies that flow as Vaayu in our body.

1 - Praana Vayu: - It consumes or inhales.

2 – Apaan Vayu: - It discards or exhales.

3 – Samaan Vayu: - It assimilates.

4 – Vayaan Vayu: - It transmits and distributes.

5 - Udayan Vayu: It manifests, like speaking.

Any disruption in the flow of Energy of these five vitalities called Praana, can cause imbalance and diseases. As an example, disruption of the Vayaan Vaayu and Udaan Vaayu can disease our metabolism which is the biological functionality of our body, which is basically the ability to fight diseases. In simple word our immune system, our physical and mental system become prey to weakness.

At the time of worshipping and Homam (the fire ritural), the emotional level is elevated and regularized the vitalities. (Something similar to Pranayama, the breathing exercise, by which a new dimension is provided to the soul, the activities of Panch-Praana can also be balanced & aligned). For more information of five vitalities along with five sub-vitalities, study the book "SvaChetana - The Blessing Of Divine" by Shashi Kapoor.

And now I will mention about the opinions that's prevails in the society. Study Next Chapters -
